The type species (holotype) of the genus Neopyropia is Neopyropia yezoensis (Ueda) L.-E.Yang & J.Brodie.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia katadae (A.Miura) M.S.Hwang, H.G.Choi, N.Kikuch & M.Miyata.
