The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus delicatulus (Hollenberg) Huisman

Adjective B (Latin), very delicate (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: Pokai Bay, O'ahu, Hawaiian Islands (Hollenberg 1968: 539). Holotype: Maxwell S.Doty MSD 19116G2; cystocarpic; 1 Aug. 1959; on Galaxaura sp. dredged from 15 fathoms. US 00061213, Barcode: 00164735 (Huisman 2018: 539).
