Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Thamnoclonium is Thamnoclonium hirsutum Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spongophloea procumbens (Weber Bosse) Huisman, De Clerck, Prud'homme & Borowitzka.

Type Information
Type locality: Sulu Archipelago, Philippines, anchorage off Kapul [Capual] Island (Siboga Exped. Stat. 106); (Huisman et al. 2011: 6) Lectotype: A. Weber-van Bosse; 4 July 1899; L; 941,182-180 (barcode: L0061146) (Huisman et al. 2011: 6, fig. 3) Notes: Nine specimens are mounted on a single herbarium sheet. Of these, the top right specimen is the one depicted by Weber-van Bosse (1921: fig. 78) and this is designated as the lectotype.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), procumbent, lying along the ground (Stearn 1973).
