Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Eucheuma is Eucheuma spinosum J.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kappaphycus alvarezii var. ajakii-assii (Doty) L.M.Liao.
Type Information
Type locality: Eucheuma farm, about 1 km southwest of the southern tip of Tumindao Island, Sulu Archipelago, Philippines; (Doty 1985: 42) Holotype: 14 January 1972; BISH; MSD 24492 (Doty 1985: 41, 42) Notes: The holotype specimen, selected from farmed material, lacks a primary discoid holdfast. A small portion of it was brought to Honolulu and dried. The holotype and several isotypes (BISH, US) were prepared from it.
