Mid-intertidal to shallow subtidal, up to 10 m depths; growing on hard substratum, or epiphytic on the seagrass Zostera marina L.
Type locality: Isla Guadalupe, Mexico (Setchell & Gardner 1930: 171). Type: H.L. Mason No. 73; April 1925; Growing on other algae. CAS 173622 (Dawson 1962: 62). Notes: Dawson (1962: 62) notes that the type specimen was epiphytic.
