Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota crenulata J.Agardh.

Taxonomic note
De Clerck (2003) notes that the status of D. bartayresiana var. denticulata is unclear. Kützing did not provide a description, but cited D. crenulata J. Agardh as a synonym which validated the name. In this case D. bartayresiana var. denticulata would be considered as a synonym of D. crenulata which is a well-established species. An alternative suggested by Silva et al. (1996: 587) would validate D. bartayresiana var. denticulata because of the presence of an illustration (special provision made for non-vascular plants made by Art. 44.2). Preference is given to the first validation procedure as no material of D. bartayresiana var. denticulata was found in Herb. Kützing or Herb. Sonder. Hence, D. bartayresiana var. denticulata is considered a synonym of D. crenulata J. Agardh. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
