Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lessonia is Lessonia flavicans Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Himantothallus grandifolius (A.Gepp & E.S.Gepp) Zinova.

Taxonomic note
Asensi & de Reviers (2009: table 1) note that in their 1906 paper, Gepp & Gepp described L. grandifolia from specimens belonging to two different collections and that in their 1906 paper they realized that these collections actually corresponded to two taxonomic entities and created Lessonia simulans for the second one.
