The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phyllotricha varians (Sonder) R.R.M.Dixon & Huisman.

Dixon, R.R.M., Huisman, J.M., Buchanan, J., Gurgel, C.F.D. & Spencer, P. (2012). A morphological and molecular study of austral Sargassum (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) supports the recognition of Phyllotricha at genus level, with further additions to the genus Sargassopsis. Journal of Phycology 48(5): 1119-1129.
