Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus hancockii (E.Y.Dawson) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Type locality: San Jose del Cabo, Baja California, Mexico; Not specified: D. 629c; 16 February 1940; epiphytic on Sargassum leaves, cast up; Herb. AHF; 61 (Dawson 1944: 332) Notes: LAM (ex AHF 61) (INA). Holotype: LAM EYD629c (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017).
