Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halimeda distorta (Yamada) Hillis-Colinvaux.

Kooistra, W.H.C.F. & Verbruggen, H. (2005). Genetic patterns in the calcified tropical seaweeds Halimeda opuntia, H. distorta, H. hederacea and H. minima (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) provide insights in species boundaries and interoceanic dispersal. Journal of Phycology 41: 177-187.

Lectotype locality: Tanah-Djampeah, Flores Sea, Indonesia; (Silva & al. 1996: 865) Lectotype (fide Colinvaux, 1968: 32): (INA 1996) Notes: Silva et al. recommend consulting Colinvaux (1968: 32) for further information regarding the type locality of this species.
