The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mesophyllum is Mesophyllum lichenoides (J.Ellis) Me.Lemoine.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: near Wellington, Island Bay, North Island, New Zealand (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 342). Lectotype: W.A. Setchell No. 6354; June 1904; uppermost sublittoral zone, on Corallina and Amphiroa. TRH B17-2551 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 342). Notes: Designated by Woelkerling & Harvey (1992: 382). Not "Bay of Islands" as in some publications.

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Plants occur subtidally to a depth of at least 15 m and intertidally on reef tops and in tide pools and on various algae, sponges and rock (Woelkerling & Harvey 1993: 588).
