Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Codiophyllum is Codiophyllum natalense J.E.Gray.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Carpopeltis spongeoplexus Womersley & J.A.Lewis.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), deceiving (used of a species closely resembling another) (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
The few in situ records have come from 5-20 m depths on shaded, generally overhung limestone substrata; associated with the sponge Ophlitaspongia sp. (Scott et al. 1984: 293, 294).
