The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Amphiroa kuetzingiana Trevisan

Adjective (Latin), covered with small wart-like outgrowths (Stearn 1973).
