Nomenclatural note
Although van den Hoek (1963: 213) credited Crouan & Crouan (1852: no. 359) with the combeination Cladophora retroflexa, this proposal predated the validation of the basionym Conferva retroflexa Bonnemaison ex H.M. Crouan & P.L. Crouan (1867:127). The name Conferva retroflexa Bonnemaison in Desmazières (1848: no. 868) in not valid since it is not accompanied by a description or reference to a previous description as required by the ICBN. In accordance with the ICBN, the combination must then be attributed to the first author after 1867 that used the bionomial, the earliest of which may be Hamel (1929: 69).
