This is a marine species.
Known from 4-25 m deep, occurring on rock usually shaded by overhangs in areas of fairly strong water movement (Kraft 1977: 235). Usually a deep water alga (10-38 m deep) occurring in shaded areas in shallower water (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 328).
Type locality: Port Philip, Victoria (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 327). Holotype: Wilson 21/91; 20 January 1891; Herb. Agardh, LD 32555 (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 327).
