The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata furcellata (C.Agardh) Kuntze.

Adjective (Latin), smooth and polished (Stearn 1973).
