The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramium secundatum Lyngbye.

Taxonomic note
"This species was described from Split (Croatia) by Kützing (1842: 740) and later by himself illustrated in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing (1863: 4, pl. 9/a-d). C. barbatum was considered as a synonym of C. secundatum (Abdelahad & D%u2019Archino, 1998: 107) and/or of its infraspecific taxa (see Furnari et al., 1999 e 2003). The epithet barbatum was re-used in different names at infraspecific ranks (see below in this note), but the resulting names should be treated as nomina nova according to Art. 58.1 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018) to be credited only to proposing authors of the respective supposed new combinations."
