The type species (holotype) of the genus Hypnea is Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) J.V.Lamouroux.

Nomenclatural notes
Hypnea rissoana was superfluous when published and hence illegitimate, because its protologue (J. Agardh, 1842: 150) included Sphaerococcus divaricatus C. Agardh (1827: 645) (=Hypnea musciformis) (Furnari et al., 1999).
