The type species (holotype) of the genus Polythrix is Polythrix corymbosa Grunow ex Bornet & Flahault.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gardnerula spongiosa (Zanardini) C.K.Tseng & M.Hua.

Adjective (Latin), spongy, porous, soft like a wet sponge (Stearn 1973).
