The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Aglaothamnion tenuissimum (Bonnemaison) Feldmann-Mazoyer

Origin of species name
resembling, or growing on or in species of the genus Furcellaria.

Type locality: Bohuslän, Sweden (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 373). Type: LD herb. alg. Agardh 19087 (Yoshida 1998: 869).

Taxonomic notes
According to Maggs & Hommersand (1993) this species is a synonym of Aglaothamnion byssoides (Arnott ex Harvey in W. J. Hooker) L’Hardy-Halos & Rueness.
