Taxonomic note
Taxon inquirendum (Furnari, pers. comm.). See Wynne (1997: 217). "This species was described by Funk (1955: 105) on some specimens dredged at 45-70 ? m depth from Secca Palumbo (Gulf of Naples, Italy). According to Funk (op. cit.), thalli of that species show blades as wide as tall (about 5 cm), nearly rounded (with no forks); cells rather large with less pigmented and close to each other plastids; marginal cells small and generally with a palisade arrangement; spermatangia (the only reproductive cells observed) are grouped in sori interspersed with sterile vegetative cells so as to give them a lobed appearance. After its description the species was quoted by Wynne (1997: 217) who briefly reported its morphological features. Gómez Garreta et al. (2001: 447) listed it among taxa inquirenda recording it, besides from the type locality [with reference to Funk (op. cit.)], also from the Balearic Islands (Spain) [with reference to Ribera Siguán & Gómez Garreta (1984) who, however, didn't report that species] and from Sicily (Italy) [with reference to the paper in press, but never published, by Giaccone & Suriano (1984), quoted by Giaccone et al. (1986: 550)]. Therefore, as far as we know, this species is known only from the type locality indicated by Funk (1955)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 483-484). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
