The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphiroa beauvoisii J.V.Lamouroux

This is a marine species.
Type locality: Bahía Petatlán, Guerrero, Mexico (Taylor 1945: 189). Holotype: Schmitt no. 120C-33; 17 Mar. 1933; Some abundance along the shore inside the Morro de Petatlán. Hancock Foundation (Taylor 1945: 189). Notes: According to Dawson (1953: 145), the type (Schmitt 120C-33) was in box 3648 and on slide 1489 in the Alan Hancock Foundation now at LAM.
