The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyosphaerium is Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum Nägeli.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mucidosphaerium pulchellum (H.C.Wood) C.Bock, Proschold & Krienitz

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), beautiful and little (Stearn 1973).

This is a freshwater species.

Type locality: in stagnis prope Philadelphia [USA] (Wood 1873: 84). Holotype: tab. 10: 4 in Woods 1872: Material of strain UTEX 731, deposited at the Culture collection of Algae at the Univ. of Texas at Austin (epitype) (Bock et al. 2011: 643). Notes: Epitype designated by Bock et al. (2011: 643).
