Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gayliella dawsonii (A.B.Joly) Barros-Barreto & F.P.Gomes.
Type Information
Type locality: Paranapoan, Município de São Vicente, Estado de São Paulo, Brazil; (Silva & al. 1996: 394) Holotype: Joly; 16 August 1955; tufts epiphytic on old specimens of Padina vickersiae and Bryothamnion seaforthii, associated with Herposiphonia tenella and Ceramium sp.; SPF?; Joly 247-1955 (Joly 1957: 150, 151, 152) Notes: Joly (1957: 150. 151, 152) notes that the type material (tetrasporangial) is located in the Herbário ficológico do Departamento de Botânica da Falcudade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo. SPF3452 (Gomes et al. 2020).
