The type species (holotype) of the genus Mallomonas is Mallomonas ploesslii Perty.

Type Information
Type locality: "Small pond 100m west of Swan River at the east end of Kings Park, Perth, Western Australia."; (Preisig 1898: 212) Type: Z; (Preisig 1898: 212) Notes: "Since it is impossible to preserve the type specimen an illustration (Fig. 1) is designated as nomenclatural type (cf. article 9.3 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature). The grid containing the type specimen and fixed samples containing M. alphaphora from the type locality are deposited in the Herbarium of the Institute of Systematic Botany, University of Zürich (Z).
