The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria reticulata Lyngbye.

Type locality: Trieste, Italy (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 575). Type: WU (Athanasiadis 1996: 197). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Prud'homme van Reine (1982: 225). Womersley (1987: 166) gives the following data: Lectotype from Trieste Italy (Wulfen); neotype in WU.
