Type locality: York, England (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 575). Type: TCD (Athanasiadis 1996: 198). Notes: According to Womersley (1987: 168), the type (Sphacelaria fusca (Hudson) Gray) is from Sidmouth, England (Griffiths): neotype in TCD.

Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
