This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ulva tanneri H.S.Hayden & Waaland
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), growing in patches or tufts, caespitose (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: Point Fermin, San Pedro, California, U.S.A (Tanner 1980: 131). Holotype: 26 May 1976; upper littoral zone. UBC 57963 (Tanner 1980: 131). Notes: Type number: A57963 (fide M.W. Hawkes (e-mail, 11.i.2007).
