The type species (holotype) of the genus Tetrastrum is Tetrastrum heteracanthum (Nordstedt) Chodat.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lemmermannia komarekii (Hindák) C.Bock & Krienitz.

Holotype locality: Petrová ves, Slovakia; (Bock & al. 2013: 337) Holotype: pl. 63: fig. 1 in Hindák 1977: material of the strain SAG 35.88 cryopreserved at the SAG Culture Collection Gottingen, Germany (designated in Bochner et al. 2013: 337). (epitype) fish pond; (Bock & al. 2013: 339) Notes: fish pond at Petrová Ves; various other locs. in western Slovakia (INA).
