The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chara aspera Willdenow.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), rough, uneven, harsh, rugged.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Stem very short, stout, internodes short, branchlets short, stout, strongly incurved. Spine-cells short, thick, obtuse.

Habitat
Growing in dense tufts, much resembling tha var. annulata of C. virgata.

Distributional note
After Groves & Bullock-Webster 1924: Abundant in Lough Neagh, from whence it was originally described, and in Lough Beg. Somewhat similar forms, not so extrame, have been found in several other Irish lakes. - (29 December 2009)
