This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Actinotaenium clevei var. crassum (West & G.S.West) Teiling.

Noun (singular possessive) (Latin), named for a person with the surname Cleve; for algae (particularly diatoms) generally, either Per Theodor Cleve (1840-1905) or Astrid Maria Cleve (1875-1968).
