Nomenclatural notes
1873: 216, pl. 19: fig. 3 (INA). - (25 Feb 2015) - Wendy Guiry

Taxonomic notes
Necchi & Oliveira (2011: 684) note that all the sequences of "C. macrospora" investigated by them were shown to belong to Batrachospermum macrosporum and thus, the indication that all macospora sequences represent a single species (B. macrosporum) from previous studies (Pueschel et al. 2000, Chiasson et al. 2005) is fully confirmed. - (27 Jul 2011) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a freshwater species.

Type information
Type locality: USA, South Carolina, Aiken (Necchi & Zucchi 1995: 210). Lectotype, designated by Necchi et al., 1993: H.W. Ravenel 160; 5.xi.1869; PH (Necchi & Zucchi 1995: 210).
