The type species (holotype) of the genus Batrachospermum is Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle.

This is a freshwater species.

Type locality: Nain, Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada (Vis & Sheath 1996: 125). Holotype: R.G. Sheath LAB 13: R.G. Sheath and M.L. Vis; 30 August 1993; Stream. UBC A81615 (Vis & Sheath 1996: 125). Notes: In later publications the date cited is 30 July 1993.
