The type species (holotype) of the genus Batrachospermum is Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Batrachospermum puiggarianum Grunow

Origin of species name
Participle (Latin), becoming black (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: Pungo Andongo, Africa. Freq. ast unico loco in branchio laterali flum. Cuanza prope ejus cataract. ad Congo (Silva 1996-to date). Lectotype: Welwitsch No. 2; Mar 1857; LISU 10 (Sheath, Vis & Cole 1993: 720). Notes: ..., Angola (Sheath et al. 1993)
