This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Enteromorpha.

Type locality: Woolwich, London, England? (Hayden et al. 2003: 289). Lectotype: Dillenius (1742: pl. 9: fig. 7) (epitype) OXF (Yoshida 1998 Notes: Blomster et al. (1999) select a lectotype (epitype) of Dillenius (1742: pl. 9: fig. 7); see also Hayden et al. (2003: 289). Type locality: 'in Mari omni' (South & Skelton, 2003).

Adjective (Latin), relating to or found in the intestines (Stearn 1973).

Nomenclatural notes
Either Link (1820: 5) or Greville (1830: lxvi, 179) is traditionally credited with having first made the combination Enteromorpha intestinalis, but in fact it was Nees (1820) who did so in the Index that he prepared for the collective work in which Link’s article was published (Silva, Meñez & Moe, 1987: 92). South & Skelton (2003) cite this species as Enteromorpha intestinalis (Linnaeus) Nees 1820: Index [2]. John et al. (2003) cite this as Enteromorpha intestinalis (Linnaeus) Nees.
