In Atlantic, common epilithic crust in the mid- to low intertidal zone on emergent bedrock, in rock pools, and in tidal canals, as an epizoic crust on mussels and other bivalves and also occasionally as an intertidal or subtidal rhodolith (sometimes associated with maerl beds); in Mediterranean only found subtidally as rhodoliths (usually in maerl beds) and as crusts epiphytic in other rhodoliths e.g., on L. incrustans (Hernandez-Kantun et al., 2015). - (8 Oct 2015) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Holotype locality: Fahy Bay, Ballynakill Harbour, Co. Galway, Ireland (Chamberlain & Irvine 1994: 74). Lectotype: TRH A23-1399 (Hernandez-Kantun et al. 2015: 797, 799, fig 6A). Notes: Holotype: TRH: A23-1399; collected by H. Hanna (viii.1899); 1-1,5 fathoms, according to Chamberlain and Irvine (1994). They recommend consulting Printz, 1929, pl. 63: figs 11-13, and Adey & Lebednik, 1967, p. 44, for more information on the holotype of this species. Hernandez-Kantun et al. (2015: 799) note that three specimens illustrated by Printz (1929: pl. LXIII, figs 11-13) have been considered to constitute the holotype. They designate the top left specimen (sequenced) in fig. 6 as the lectotype.
