Taxonomic notes
Balech (1995: 27) regards this species as a currently accepted name and distince from Alexandrium minutum.

According to Costas et al. (1995: 806), their immunological detection, lectin binding patterns, and Lsu RNA sequencing results suggest that A. minutum and A. lusitanicum are the same genospecies and they propose that A. minutum and A. lusitanicum be considered synonymous. Leaw et al. (2005: 560) note that Hansen et al. (2003) suggested conspecificity among Alexandrium minutum, A. lusitanicum and A.angustitabulatum. According to McCauley et al. (2009: 461), their sequencing and microsatellite data provide no distinction between A. lusitanicum and A. minutum supporting the reclassification of A. lusitanicumas A. minutum, as was noted by Lilly et al. (2005). - (5 Feb 2010) - Wendy Guiry
