Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chaetoceros is Chaetoceros tetrachaeta Ehrenberg.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Attheya gaussii (Heiden) R.M.Crawford

Type locality: 'Gausberg', Antarctica, (66º48'S, 89º12'E) (Crawford, Hinz & Koschinski 2000: 241). Lectotype: BRM 283/84 (figs 20, 23, 24) (epitype) 8 October 1902; 70 m. BRM 283/42 (Crawford, Hinz & Koschinski 2000: 241). Notes: An epitype is selected by Crawford et al. (2000) to support the lectotype illustrated by Simonsen in 1992.
