The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh.

Nomenclatural note
According to De Clerck (2003), this is an illegitimate new name for Fucus squamarius (1768: 171, pl. 20, fig. 1a,b). Nothing prevented Lamouroux from using the epithet squamaria and hence the change to squamata was unwarranted. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
