Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphiroa beauvoisii J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: Not specified, "Misaki, Shimoda and Sunosaki" are listed; (Norris & Johansen 1981: 6) Lectotype: Yendo's illustrations: (Norris & Johansen 1981: 6) Notes: Dawson (1953: 146) Type locality not specifically designated but the Japanese localities of Misaki, Shimoda and Sunosaki indicated.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), zoned, banded, marked circularly (Stearn 1973).
