This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithothamnion phymatodeum Foslie
Type locality: Pacific Grove, California, U.S.A. (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 317). Lectotype: W.A. Setchell 1595; i.1897; no habitat data on type. TRH B15-2369 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 317).

This is a marine species.
Type locality: Pebble Beach, Monterey County, California (Dawson 1960: 23). Lectotype: W .A. Setchell 1595; Jan, 1897; In pools just below low water mark. Herb. Trondheim (Dawson 1960: 23).
