Taxonomic note
Lawson & John (1987: 227) note (added in proof) that Steentoft (pers, comm., March 1987) has examined the type material (Ribeiro 14) in Coimbra (COI) and found it to consist of both male and female plants. The male plants have spermatangia confined to deep crypts in the thallus surface and so this species should be referred to Polycavernosa. Additional remarks in Lawson & John (1987: 229). John et al. (2004)cite Hydropuntia henriquesiana (Hariot) M.J. Wynne as a synonym of this species which “possibly belongs to Gracilaria rangiferina”. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
