Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Neochloris is Neochloris aquatica Starr.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chlororustica terrestris (Herndon) Shin Watanabe, N.Mezaki & Tatsuya Suzuki.

Type locality: near Daniel Town, Jamaica; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: W. Herndon WH2-J; xii. 1949; soil in corn field; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Strain WH2-J (=UTEX 947) (Watanabe et al., 2021).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), growing on the ground or soil, as opposed to rocks or trees (Stearn 1973).
