The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramothamnion japonicum (Okamura) M.J.Wynne & C.W.Schneider.

Syntype localities: Japan; both Pacific and Japan Sea coasts; Type: SAP; herb. Okamura (Yoshida 1998: 896)
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
Grows on Sargassum thunbergii, Rhodomela larix and on various other algae, between tide marks near high tide (Nakamura 1965: 155).
