The type species (holotype) of the genus Stephanodiscus is Stephanodiscus niagarae Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cyclostephanos costatilimbus (Hiromu Kobayasi & Hideaki Kobayashi) Stoermer, H.Håkansson & E.C.Theriot.

Type locality: "Hachirogata Regulation Pond, Akita Prefecture, northen Japan" [Northern Japan]; (Kobayasi & Kobayashi 1986: 9) Notes: "Holotype: H. K. T -79 in coll. H. KOBAYASHI. Iconotype: figs 1, 2, ?photomicrographs in different focus of the holotype specimen."
