The type species (holotype) of the genus Tropidoneis is Tropidoneis vitrea (W.Smith) Cleve.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Manguinea fusiformis (Manguin) Paddock.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
