The type species (holotype) of the genus Ralfsia is Ralfsia deusta (C.Agardh) Berkeley.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Petalonia fascia (O.F.Müller) Kuntze.

Taxonomic note
Wynne (1969: 30) established that this was a stage in the life histroy of Petalonia fascia using material from the type locality. Gabrielson, Widdowson & Lindstrom (2004: 59; 2006: 75) point out that if material referred to this name on the west coast of North America represent an independent species, a new name will be required. - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
