The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachelomonas intermedia P.A.Dangeard.

Adjective (Latin), smooth, free from uneveness, hairs or roughness (Stearn 1983).
