Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum crassiusculum (Foslie) Lebednik.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: White's Point, near San Pedro, California; (Setchell & Mason 1943: 93) Lectotype: W.A. Setchell (#1149); December 1895; Growing on pebbles (moving freely with the waves) in tide pools and in a small inlet in the reef; TRH; B15-2379 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 318) Notes: According to Setchell & Mason (1943: 93), this entity was based on two specimens from California: White's Point, near San Pedro, and a second from San Pedro itself. The first was selected as the lectotype by the authors and the second was the basis for Lithothamnion aculeiferum Setchell & L.R. Mason. Athanasiadis et al. (2004) note that there are paratypes in UC (736373, 736367)
