Type locality: North Sea: Deswartes, Nieuport, Belgium (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 22). Holotype: (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 22).

Europe: Britain (Parke & Dixon 1976), Greece (Aligizaki & Nikolaidis 2006), Italy (Penna et al. 2005), Netherlands (Penna et al. 2005), Spain (Penna et al. 2005, Laza-Martinez et al. 2011).

North America: Florida (Penna et al. 2005, Haywood et al. 2007).

Central America: Belize (Faust 1992).

Australia and New Zealand: New Zealand (Chang et al. 2012).

Nomenclatural notes
Dodge (1982: 147) notes it is possible that Glenodinium obliquum Pouchet (1883) is the same as this species or it may be closely related. This needs further study.
